Women in The Tech Industry 2022
As we are in Women’s Month, It’s important to recognize Women’s effective role in the Tech Industry, The pioneers in the field who crafted the road for generations, and those who fought to keep up with their work and their personal lives whistle Covid-19 Pandemic.
Let’s go back to The women who changed the tech world in the 1940s. Let us begin with Ada Lovelace, the World’s first computer programmer. Her mathematical talent was obvious from her early life, and her skills and interest in machines led to a working relationship with Charles Babbage. Babbage was the inventor of the “Analytical Engine”, a complicated device that was never created but resembled the elements of a modern computer. As a result of her work on the project, Ada is often referred to as the “world’s first computer programmer.” It was Lovelace’s notes on the Analytical Engine that Alan Turing used as a form of inspiration for his work on the first modern computer in the 1940s.
Moving to Hedy Lamarr – Hedy was a self-taught inventor and film actress, who was awarded a patent in 1942 for her “secret communication system”, which she designed with the help of the composer, George Antheil. This frequency hopping system was intended as a way to set radio-guided torpedoes off course during the war, but the idea eventually inspired the creation of Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth technology that we commonly use today.
In the present day, A recent study by UNESCO indicated that 57 percent of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics graduates in Arab countries are women, while in the UAE 61 percent of university STEM students are female. We cannot ignore the fact that the effect of Covid-19 has altered our ways of life. According to a recent McKinsey study on working women, the pandemic could have erased at least six years of progress toward women’s equality. Research has it that Mothers Are 3 Times More Likely Than Fathers to Have Lost Their Jobs due to the Pandemic. According to 65,000 workers during the pandemic, women experienced more burnout, stress, exhaustion, and pressure to work than men. Taking into consideration the traditional view that women are expected to be primary caretakers of children or aging relatives further expanded the burden on women in the workplace.
